We’re so grateful for the Save the Harbor/Save the Bay Foundation and Massachusetts DCR for a very generous grant to support our upcoming, super fun Beach Write-in and Writer Social at Carson Beach in Boston on Sunday, September 10th at 12noon! We’re celebrating the end of our Fall Retreat with a free-for-everyone beach social outing and we’re inviting the Guild and every other writing community we can think of to join us for a write-in and social on the harbor in the City!
Want to join us? Let us know by getting a free ticket via EventBrite!
Why the Beach in September?
As one of our Board members put it, “the best time to go swimming in the ocean in New England is September! That’s when the water is actually warm!” It’s true! Early September is still summer in New England. Even though we all are dreaming of pumpkin spice lattes and cider donuts, there are plenty of hot days left in those first weeks of September!
The MetroWest Writers’ Guild has been known for its lovely socials. We love to gather around food, talk about our stories, and share our writing journey together. Usually when we get together, it’s cold (Our Kick-off and TGIO for NaNoWriMo, in particular). This year, we’ve been embracing warm-weather gatherings, like our successful Spring Retreat at Drumlin Farm back in May and now this upcoming Beach social, which we hope to make a new tradition to help kick off our NaNoWriMo Season programming, which runs from end of August through to December.
Who is invited?
YOU.
Yes, you! Do you love to tell stories? Do you write short stories, flash fiction, memoir, screenplays, stage plays, novels, anything and anything? We want to see you! YOU are invited to join us for this beach day!
Do you have to be a member of the MetroWest Writers’ Guild to participate?
NO! You can be part of any of the local writing communities of Eastern Massachusetts OR you can just be a person who loves to write and wants to hang out with writers for the afternoon!
What’s a write-in, anyway? Does this mean we’re only writing, quietly, in the sand all day?
A write-in is an invitation to write in public with other writers in a designated spot. Guild Write-ins have been from anywhere between public library basements to breweries and coffee shops. A write-in is time and space away from home to write. We love to do them and we hope you will love to join them!
That being said, you do not have to write during our Beach Write-in and Social! You can come just for the “social” part! Meet fellow writers who also live in MetroWest! Share what you’re working on and listen to what other writers are working on! You’ll be surprised how inspiring that is!
What should I bring?
We suggest a bathing suit/comfortable clothing, a beach towel, sunscreen, water (we’re working on beverages/snacks, but it’s nice to know you’ll have something!), a hat maybe, a notebook and a pen/pencil (We don’t recommend laptops for sandy places!), and maybe a change of clothes for traveling home afterward?
What should I expect?
This is a casual event for writers to get together with fellow writers. However! We will be encouraging writers to write with different prompts, some writing supplies, a Flash Fiction contest, and lots of little surprises and goodies. We’ll also be inviting writers to do some readings of their work (Yes, out loud! Yes in public) if they so choose at the end of the event to celebrate the work we’ve written together and get excited about the writing season to come.
I have more questions, can I talk to someone?
Yes, please get in touch with Kyra Wilson Cook, Founding Director of the MetroWest Writers’ Guild at Kyra@metrowestwriters.org.
We will be posting more details as we get closer to the event! Please stay tuned here on our website, or visit our Facebook or Instagram pages. Don’t forget to get a FREE ticket via EventBrite here!
