Queer narratives are more than just narratives featuring queer people. Stories that challenge societal norms often use modes of storytelling that challenge the norms of traditional, realistic fiction too. In this class, we will discuss ways to write complex queer storylines and examine works of queer fiction that “break the rules” in some way, paying attention to genre, story structure, and unusual craft techniques. Our goal is to come away with an appreciation of literature that is “queer” in every sense of the word. (Both queer writers and allies are encouraged to attend.)
